Manage Your Diabetes

How to Manage Diabetes During Ramazan?

It can be challenging to manage Diabetes during Ramazan especially if you are fasting. During the fast, 8 hours after the last meal, the human body starts using the energy stored inside to keep the Blood Sugar Level normal. This is totally normal for most people, but in case you are Diabetic, your body will not be able to use the glucose as it should. If you are already taking some tablets or Insulin, you are at the risk of developing Low Blood Glucose Level. That’s why when people with Diabetes fast, they often have to rush to the doctor. This is not the only risk. If you eat large meals at Sehar and Iftar, you are at the risk of developing high blood sugar level. This can lead to both long-term and short-term health problems.

So does that mean a person with Diabetes cannot fast at all? That’s not necessary. Firstly, it is recommended to talk to your doctor before fasting. Secondly, to fast safely, you must check your Blood Glucose Level regularly.  Blood Sugar Levels below 70mg/dL or above 300mg/dL are considered unsafe.

Managing Diabetes with Diet and Exercise

Before and during Ramazan, it is important to get consultation with your physician rather than damaging your health by Diabetes. Keep on checking your Blood Sugar Level during fasting, this does not break your fast. If at any time of the day during fasting your Blood Sugar becomes low and goes below 70 or 60 mg/dL, immediately break your fast, rather than waiting for Iftar time, keep yourself safe so you can fast in future.
Here are some tips that can help you fast and manage Diabetes:

Avoid Consuming Fine Sugar

Breaking the fast with dates is traditional. However, as dates are rich in sugar, it is recommended to limit how much you eat. Juices, bottles, syrups and other fluids that contain fine sugar is not recommended. Furthermore, avoid eating large amounts of foods that are rich in fat and carbs both at Sehar and Iftar.

Break your Meals

Instead of eating one big meal, distribute the calories over 2 to 3 small meals during the no-fasting interval. This will prevent the risk of High Blood Sugar Level.

Eat foods that Help Regulate your Blood Sugar Level

Consume foods that steadily increase the Blood Sugar Level at Sehar. Such foods include Whole Grain Bread, Low Sugar Cereals, Lentils, and Beans. These are the foods which are digested slowly and they help maintain your Blood Glucose (Sugar) Level. They will also make you feel less hungry.

Consume Adequate Amount of Fluid

In order to prevent the risk of dehydration, blood clots, and kidney troubles, it is extremely crucial to make sure your fluid intake is sufficient. Water and sugar-free drinks are best for you. Fluids must be taken in different intervals between Sehar and Iftar. That’s important because when we drink plenty of water at Sehar and Iftar, it does not store in the cells. So, periodically taking glasses of water is the best way to keep your cells hydrated.

Advice for Type 1 Diabetes Patients

If you are patient with Type 1 Diabetes (which means your body does not produce insulin at all), you should not fast at all. However, if you work on a dosage and health management program prior to Ramazan with the help of your Diabetes Healthcare Provider, then you may come up with a safe plan to fast.

Advice for Type 2 Diabetes Patients

If you are a patient with Type 2 Diabetes (which means your body does not produce an adequate amount of insulin or react to insulin properly) and are already on some kind of oral medications and diet, then you may be able to fast. However, it is still best to speak to your Healthcare Provider about the dosage and timing of your medication.

When to see a Doctor?

Before you plan to fast, talk to your Primary Care Physician, Internal Medicine, Endocrinologist or Diabetologist to be sure it is safe for you. In case you experienced Low Blood Pressure, Dehydration or your Blood Sugar Level decreased/increased during the fast, rush to the doctor immediately.
